July 24 is a special date for all amber lovers - on that day the Amber Museum was officially opened in its new premises in the Great Mill. Everything there is unique - both the rich collection of more than 1,000 amber exhibits and the renovated 12th century mill.

Unique amber collection

The Amber Museum in Gdansk has a lot to boast about - in more than a decade of existence it has managed to collect more than 1000 exhibits. Each of them is absolutely unique by the very fact that... it is. We will understand this when we realize that Baltic amber is both a durable and impermanent material - although it was created more than 40 million years ago, but due to its fragility, many works made of it have not survived to our time. So it is no wonder that the objects of ancient and modern art nowadays reach very high prices indeed and are a real rarity on the antiquarian market, museum market and among private collectors.

Unique amber exhibits

Among them, it is worth mentioning the unique amber chess pieces - not only because they cost about 2.4 million PLN and several of the world's leading museums applied for their purchase, but above all because they were created in Gdansk and even today, after 300 years, they can still celebrate the craftsmanship of Gdansk amber workers. Like the amber cabinet signed "Danzig/28. Julius/Ao 1724/ Johan George-/ Zernebach," representing a group of exclusive gifts passed between royal and princely courts - this is one of only a few amber works of the time on which the master left his name. Associated with Gdansk is the inclusion of a Gdansk gecko - this is the second (but much better preserved than the first) specimen of a gecko in Baltic amber with a length of more than 2 cm.

There are many, many more of these amber unique exhibits in the Museum, as museum officials make every effort to ensure that the most beautiful exhibits go to Gdansk.

A unique collection of contemporary art

The Amber Museum in Gdansk boasts a rich (if not the richest) and impressive collection of contemporary amber art, consisting of works by leading Polish artists and designers as well as internationally recognized artists. This is primarily jewelry with Baltic amber (but also other varieties of amber), but also sculpture, as well as paintings.

The collection - which we announce with undying pride - also includes the amber painting "Breakthrough Time" by Monika Blaszkowska, Amber Decor's chief designer. In her works, the artist often breaks the pathos of amber stereotypically associated mainly with jewelry - which in itself is already groundbreaking. In addition, through the materials and colors used, as well as associations with Gdansk and its history, she shows that each of us has a "breakthrough time" in life when we need to make an exceptional sacrifice to save the values we profess. "What matters in life is not always what is beautiful, but what is important," says Monika Blaszkowska.
